Sanbona Wildlife Reserve, Montagu
Nestled in the heart of South Africa’s Little Karoo region, Sanbona Wildlife Reserve, Montagu, sprawls across a vast 54,000 hectares. This breathtaking sanctuary is not just a haven for a dazzling array of wildlife, but serves as a beacon of hope for wildlife heroes and conservationists in South Africa for their proactive conservation efforts.
Established in 2011, Sanbona is more than just a wildlife reserve; it’s a testament to humanity’s ability to coexist with nature and actively protect endangered species.
A Commitment to Conservation
Sanbona was born from a vision of preserving the unique ecosystems and landscapes of the Little Karoo. Owned by the non-profit CALEO Foundation, the reserve prioritizes the well-being of the land and its inhabitants. Conservation is at the core of everything they do, from anti-poaching initiatives to habitat restoration programs.
The reserve is situated within two globally recognized biodiversity hotspots: the Succulent Karoo and protected Fynbos areas. These regions boast an exceptional concentration of plant and animal life, many of which are endemic to the area. Sanbona Wildlife Reserve plays a crucial role in safeguarding these irreplaceable ecosystems and the creatures that call them home.
A Tapestry of Wildlife
Embark on a safari at Sanbona, and be greeted by a mesmerizing tapestry of wildlife. The reserve is home to a captivating array of animals, including the majestic Black Rhinoceros, the powerful Cheetah, the elusive Cape Mountain Zebra, and the adorable Riverine Rabbit. Keep your eyes peeled for predators like the regal Lion and the cunning Leopard, while the gentle giants like the African Elephant and Hippopotamus might leave you in awe.
Sanbona’s magic extends beyond the iconic safari animals. The reserve is a haven for a plethora of birdlife, with over 250 species recorded. Birdwatching enthusiasts will delight in spotting the soaring Black Eagle, the colourful Knysna Loerie, and the endemic Cape Rock Jumper. Look closely, and you might even catch a glimpse of the elusive Black-footed Cat or the endangered Aardvark.
Protecting the Vulnerable
Sanbona’s commitment to conservation extends to a particular focus on protecting endangered species. The Black Rhinoceros, once a common sight in South Africa, has been decimated by poaching. Sanbona is a critical sanctuary for these creatures, providing them with a safe haven to roam and reproduce, while attempting to protect these natural wonders from the ever reaching hands of poachers and land developers.
The reserve also plays a vital role in the conservation of the Cheetah, another endangered species facing habitat loss and conflict with humans. Sanbona’s dedicated team works tirelessly to ensure the Cheetah population thrives within the reserve.
Wildlife Heroes: Guardians of Sanbona

At the heart of Sanbona’s conservation efforts are the dedicated individuals who comprise the Anti-Poaching Unit (APU). These unsung heroes work tirelessly to protect the reserve’s precious wildlife from the threat of poaching.
To become a Wildlife Hero requires a unique blend of physical and mental strength, unwavering dedication, and a deep passion for conservation. These individuals are the first line of defence, patrolling the vast reserve, monitoring wildlife populations, and gathering crucial data to inform conservation strategies.
