South Africa’s Roman’s Pizza, born as Little Caesar’s back in 1993, was once famous for their “two in one” deals. However, the Covid-19 pandemic and consequent lockdowns wider business woes led to discounts getting sliced from the menu. The tough times turned the pizza industry into a topping battleground, with traditional classics locking horns with adventurous newcomers like fruit, aloe vera, caramelized onions, and, yes, even insects. Yet despite the hardships, the game of pizzas marches on, armed with DIY recipes, versatile ingredients, and an insatiable appetite for innovation (and melted cheese).
